NFC Chip Reading: verifying the identity card in credit card format
The new national identity card, issued since 2021 in credit card format, incorporates a NFC-readable electronic chip. This chip stores civil status data, the holder’s photo, and a cryptographic signature issued by the issuing authority (ANTS).
NFC reading offers a higher level of assurance than visual checks or simple MRZ verification. When a smartphone or NFC reader queries the chip, it verifies that the cryptographic signature is authentic and intact. An absent, silent chip, or one whose signature does not match indicates a fake document.
Specifically, the France Identité application allows for this verification. The holder places their card against the phone, the chip is read, and then ANTS confirms online that the title is authentic and valid. This process provides a much more robust confirmation than a photo of a card sent via email or messaging.
Limitations of NFC Reading to Know
NFC reading only works with cards in the new format. Older laminated identity cards (A4 folded format) do not have a chip. For these documents, checks remain limited to visual examination and MRZ verification.
The phone used must also be NFC compatible, which excludes some older or entry-level models. The position of the card relative to the phone’s NFC sensor may require a few attempts before the reading is successful.
Physical Security Features: What Visual Examination Can Still Detect
Physical checks remain useful, especially when digital verification is not possible. The French identity card contains several overlapping security features:
- An iridescent hologram visible under incident light, which changes color depending on the angle of observation. On the new identity card, it incorporates the holder’s portrait in a laser-engraved image within the polycarbonate.
- Relief elements that can be felt by touch, including the embossed printed mentions and the surface texture of the document.
- Optically variable ink in certain areas, whose hue changes when the card is tilted.
- The identity photo, integrated directly into the polycarbonate support in the new format, making its replacement extremely difficult without damaging the card.
An effective visual check involves verifying that all these elements exist simultaneously. The absence of even one of them is enough to cast doubt on the authenticity of the document.
Document Fraud Detection through Image Analysis: What Professional Tools Do
The verification solutions used by banks, rental platforms, and online services go beyond human checks. They incorporate image integrity checks and metadata to identify retouched or artificially generated documents.
These tools analyze the origin of the image file (camera, screenshot, editing software), look for signs of inconsistent compression, and detect local anomalies in the pixels. A document modified with editing software leaves digital signatures that the human eye cannot perceive, but an algorithm can identify.
Artificial intelligence signals are also employed to detect identity documents generated by deepfake models. AI-assisted document fraud is a recent threat that traditional visual checks are no longer sufficient to counter.
Online Document Verification: What is Accessible to Individuals
Individuals do not have access to the same tools as professionals. The France Identité service remains the most reliable channel for an individual wishing to verify a digital identity document. It allows for the validation of a document shared via the application, with confirmation from the issuing authority.
For a physical card received in person, the combination of visual examination of security features and logical verification of the MRZ offers a reasonable level of trust, without requiring a subscription to a third-party service.

Thus, the verification of an identity card relies on three complementary levels: the logical consistency of the MRZ, the cryptographic reading of the NFC chip when available, and the physical examination of security features. None of these checks taken in isolation guarantees the authenticity of the document. It is their combination that reduces the risk of fraud to a very low level.
